It was three months ago when Richard first contacted me regarding a portrait session. I sent over my information over to him and told him my availability, but it wasn’t until a few emails in before he told me that he wanted this session to be a proposal. I squealed with happiness reading his email and could not get over it! Jennifer is Kyle’s cousin, so I’ve gotten to know these two over the past two years. 🙂 Knowing them personally really made this even more of an honor and so incredibly special!!! Of course we had to make this work out! The only thing I was nervous was if Jennifer was going to somehow find out what we were up to…

Fortunately, whenever I touched base with Richard or Jennifer’s mom they would update me saying that Jennifer has NO idea! I’ll admit that I had a BLAST being undercover. 😉 Heheh! The one thing that concerned me was that Jennifer was questioning Richard why they were doing a portrait session. Of course I needed to reassure her that I don’t just photograph engagements or marriage, but also couples in love! Since they were celebrating an anniversary of being together, he thought it would be an appropriate excuse … and it worked. 😉

We arrived at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and the scheming began. I knew the perfect spot for this proposal to happen and we would plan to do it half way through so she had no idea. Once the first part of the session was completed, I had them go into the bathroom to change … which was the perfect time for Richard to get his game face on and prepare the big question! We went straight to the gazebo and I told Richard in our phone conversation that I would set them up, take some photos and then say that I need to switch out my lens … which will be a cue for him to get down on one knee so he has that second to breathe and go at his own pace. I got up and he dropped down on one knee to ask for her hand in marriage. She said YES and was completely in shock! 🙂 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
