Saturday, I spent the afternoon with my mom attending an organizing event hosted by Organizational Specialists Inc. at the gorgeous Oh Sew Persnickety Fabrics and Threads shop! So much fun brainstorming what I can do with my craft room. 🙂 Perfect timing I would say as I’m preparing for the big move next month! AH!
I collected some quick notes from my time there and thought I would share them with you. Kristin is well known for her organizing business (even by HGTV <= my favorite TV network) and is local to the Northern Virginia area! She’s sweet, honest and super helpful! There are a couple of points below I thought to myself, “I should have known that!” … But do you think I do it? Nope! Haha! This was a great kick in the bootay to really start organizing every little detail in my craft room! Here are a few things I learned from Kristin when organizing a craft room:
* When organizing colored beads, separate them in to their own container. The container should be clear (like tupperware) and labeled with the color name. That way there is no guessing! This seems like it would be obvious but I’m guilty for throwing everything together in a bag or a little box.
* If you sew, there is a great and cheap way to keep your thread spools / bobbins organized! Cut out a piece of styrofoam to fit the bottom of a tupperware. Cut coffee stirrers to the appropriate length to hold thread spool + bobbin + thickness of styrofoam. Take your cut coffee stirrer and pierce the styrofoam where you want the thread spools to be. Make sure the styrofoam is at least .5″ thick in order to hold the coffee stirrers in place. Wahla!
* Kallex Ikea storage is great for a craft room as well as any plastic storage cart that can easily fit under an ironing board or a desk!
* Comic book cover boards are great for organizing fabrics! Sturdy, appropriate size and reasonably priced! Take your cut out comic book cover board and fold your fabric around. Make sure when you are storing your fabrics that you are not placing them vertically on top of each other. If you need to reach for a fabric on the bottom of the stack, that can be messy. Try organizing them in a container or drawer where you can look down and pull up your selected fabric. Everything will stay in place. 🙂
* Label EVERYTHING! 🙂 Even if the container is clear, the uniformity of the room will look great because of this little, consistent detail. You can pick up little label holders that can stick on to your storage container from Michaels Craft Store. Design the label card on your computer, print and cut to the appropriate size of the label holder. Easy! When dealing with a particular category like “glues” and “tape”, you’re just better off labeling it “adhesives”! Fortunately for me, I do have a box labeled “adhesives”! The one thing I do right with my craft supplies. 😉
* Who has a ton of ribbon on hand?! I know I definitely do! There are two different ways to go about this … 1) Take the ribbon completely off the spool! The spool is unnecessary space when storing ribbon. Hang your ribbons on the side of your desk, shelf unit or wherever is the most convenient in your craft room with a piece of magnet so it is easy to see the ribbon when reaching for it. 2) If you like the uniformity of the ribbon on the spools, purchase an open lid container and a chop stick. Place all of the ribbon spools on the chop stick and place in container! Can easily fit into your plastic storage cart. There are also SO many other ideas on Pinterest!
