Update Your Kitchen | Builder Grade to Personality

Update Kitchen Hardware for an update with personality | Cabinet Knobs and Pulls

After officially settling in my new home last month, I have enjoyed sharing some projects I have taken on. Best part? Sharing those projects with everyone! From simple to complex, I have enjoyed transforming spaces and even furniture to match my style. I’ve had many guests come through and mention how my house is “so Stephanie”. I’m still trying to grasp what exactly is “so Stephanie” (lol!), but it must mean I did something right! 😉

For today’s post, I thought I would share one of the first things I did when moving in! What’s a simple and low-budget way to update the look of your kitchen? Changing out hardware! I’m fortunate to have a kitchen with a pantry … Believe me, I’m thankful after my previous rentals never had a pantry! In my opinion, the pantry doors and the kitchen cabinets didn’t have much personality because the door knobs/hardware was just builder grade. There is nothing wrong with builder grade hardware!!! I chose to switch out the hardware because I enjoy decorating with character. You can add a lot of personality with just a simple cabinet knob! Originally, I fell in LOVE with some knobs from Schoolhouse Electric (I mean, who wouldn’t), but I could not justify spending $22 per knob when I had budgets. Schoolhouse Electric is great though since they are all about quality and unique design so if you can afford it, it’s worth it! Honestly, I ventured to Amazon and found brass knobs for WAY cheaper! Friendly to my budget. 😉

Before I really jump into this post, I actually decided to keep the builder grade knobs and door handles. I realize that the next buyers might not like my style so it’s better to be safe than sorry by keeping them in the attic! Just in case. 🙂

When it came to my pantry door knobs, I wasn’t really looking to swap them out at first. It wasn’t until I walked into Architectural Old House Parts in Front Royal, Virginia when I found myself randomly looking at their ceramic door knobs. When you’re in that store, you cannot help but to look at EVERYTHING! It’s pretty awesome! I starred at them and had a weird idea to utilize them in my house. Those door knobs do not only have personality, but they have history because it most likely came from a historic house! I ran across the skeleton key rim lock thingy (I have no clue what they are called!) to give those white ceramic door knobs even more of a statement! Of course you wouldn’t typically see something like that on a pantry door, but I thought why not create a piece that compliments the style I was after in my home?! I love the turn out!!!

You can even do this! SO simple! If you have one drill hole per door, find a knob that you wouldn’t need to drill another hole. Just unscrew the old knob and screw in the new knob! Soooo easy!!! I will say the cabinet pull hardware on the drawers were a little tricky because it required two holes. I had to measure and drill two new holes in my brand new cabinets. A little nerve wrecking but I have no regrets! Fortunately with the style of cabinet pulls I chose I was able to cover the old existing hole with the hardware! 😉 As for the pantry door knobs, I had to drill a bigger hole and extend it though the door rather than just half way through like they had it. I took a bolt from the other side and screwed the knob on. I patched the old screw holes in the door by using caulk and paint! That was definitely more work than the cabinet doors but it was worth it and it honestly wasn’t that time consuming!!! 🙂 Here are the results!!
