DIY Farmhouse Repurposed Table | Part I

DIY Repurposed Farmhouse Dining Room Table

When I was envisioning a space to gather family and friends in my home, a big and pretty wooden dining room table was exactly what I hoped for. What came to my surprise was the price of purchasing a brand new eight-person table with eight chairs! Yikes! We are talking at least $1,000 … And that’s just from Target! I was longing to have something that would last longer than a few years, but the quality is justified by the price tag. I didn’t want to sacrifice design, though, so I was stuck.

As you know, I LOVE shopping for great deals. Sometimes, the best deals come when you least expect it. Over a year ago, as I was walking into a local grocery store when something told me to go to the next door thrift shop. As soon as I walked in, I saw a huge eight-person table with upholstered chairs. It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but I fell in LOVE with the bones of the table and the durability of the chairs! No joke, the chairs are SO heavy … You would be surprised! What’s funny about this situation was the fact that with the vision of the “farmhouse table,” I had hoped to purchase a bench with the set. Coincidentally, the table set at the thrift shop only had five chairs, making it a perfect situation to find a suitable bench!

I asked the thrift shop for more information, and my jaw dropped. They told me the “once a model home dining room set” was on sale for $12 per chair and $140 for the table!!! I immediately knew it wasn’t a coincidence why I stumbled into the thrift shop… The funny thing is they had just brought that table into their shop that day. Less than 24-hours and that table had a “sold” sticker with my name on it! After I had bought it, I had a little freak out moment how I was going to pull off my dream table…

I had confidence I would be able to pull off this project. After all, my mom has conquered various projects in the past so I could rely on her if I needed help. I had the dining room set hauled back to my parent’s house so I could work on it in a spacious, covered environment! The table took up half of the garage, so I’m thankful for my family’s patience as I worked on the project. I also reupholstered/painted the chairs, so it fit the design aesthetic. I worked through a lot of different plans between the table and chairs, but I figured out how to achieve the look I was after working on it for over a month. I’m no expert, but for my first time, I was excited with the results! I’ll be sharing how I did this, step by step, in another blog post soon!!

When it came time to figure out how I was going to find the perfect bench, I was stumped. I was concerned how I was going to blend a new bench with the look of my table/chairs. In the midst of the search, I stumbled upon one of my past groom’s woodwork through Facebook! I was so impressed with his work so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to reach out to Josh and Kaitlyn for more information about custom furniture. After giving him dimensions and photos, he was off to work! Shortly after, I received an email with a sneak peek of the finished product, and I was ECSTATIC! He designed it so the structure matched the table while keeping in mind how the bench would fit in between the legs of the table (something I would not have thought about). Seeing the set together, I could not be more thrilled with his top-notch service/quality! Check out, LIKE and follow along on Josh’s Facebook and Instagram @hertzlerdesign! His work is amazing, and I know you’ll be impressed!!! I mean, just look at what he did below! 🙂
