DIY Kitchen Utensil Drawer Wooden Dividers

DIY Kitchen Utensil Drawer Wooden Dividers

When I moved into my house last year, I was more concerned about exterior details looking situated. I knew going into the 2017 year, I wanted to focus on organization, especially in the kitchen! In January, I went through every cabinet and drawer and listed general kitchen utensils, appliances, plate ware and everything in between on a word document. I would share before and after photos of how I completely reorganized my cabinets, but I don’t think you would really be able to tell unless you saw it in person and looked from all angles. It’s all about systems and what makes sense in the kitchen. It doesn’t make sense to not have pots and pans close to the stove, right? Or, plates and cups shouldn’t be the furthest away from the sink. These are all pretty known, but when it came to the most random things … and as everyone knows, that’s VERY easy to build up a collection of random stuff in the kitchen … it might be necessary to deep clean every year! I got rid of some old mugs, old plates and any appliances I might have upgraded from. After I had reconfigured my kitchen layout, I looked at these drawers below and thought there had to be a better way to reorganize them. As you see, I tried purchasing a plastic utensil organizer, but things were overflowing, and it wasn’t using the space efficiently. Yikes! And before I bought that white organizer, utensils were EVERYWHERE. Then I ran across THIS article on Pinterest, and it completely spurred motivation to fix this while I live in this house. The best part? The wood to build this was CHEAPER than the plastic divider!!! So why not do this in your own space?

Materials You Need:

-Gorilla Wood Glue
-Wood (I bought Home Depot’s 2″ pine wood and only needed 3 boards)
-Saw or some sort of cutting device (I used a miter saw)
-Measuring tape + scrap paper and pencil
-Paper towels

Directions:

1) Map out how you want to organize the drawers! Group similar utensils together, take each group and lay them down in the drawer in a way that puzzle pieces together. Leave empty, obvious space around the grouping so you know where you can make measurements.

2) After you draw the design on your scrap paper, it’s time to measure! Measure the overall drawer dimensions and then each piece you need to cut. Add those cut pieces together to figure how many boards you need to purchase. I believe the boards I bought were 48″ long? I bought four boards, but it turned out that I only needed three!

3) Purchase/gather your supplies! It’s time to cut!! Cut only a little section of the pieces (I did a half drawer worth) and take it to the drawer to make sure everything fits snug. Remeasure the remaining space in case things shift and then cut out your next part of puzzle pieces. Once you have the pieces cut, see how it looks in the drawer! I took a photo above (on the left) of what it looked like before gluing.

4) Time to glue!! Don’t glue the entire drawer of wood together because you need clearance around the counter edge above the drawer!! 🙂 I ended up sticking half of the wooden pieces together so I can place them in without struggling. After the pieces had been a little dry (30-minutes later), I situated the drawer parts vertically so gravity helped “clamp” down the pieces for extra security. I let that sit for another 15-minutes, and they were ready to be inserted into the drawers! That’s it!

Here are the Results!!!
