There’s something so special about photographing weddings that come full circle — and Renee and Nolan’s Airlie Warrenton, Virginia wedding was the most heartfelt example of that. They tied the knot at the very same venue where Renee’s parents said “I do” years ago! Their wedding day felt like a beautiful blend of family legacy, deep love, and joyful celebration — and even the geese at Airlie seemed to approve. Haha!
Nolan & Renee’s Wedding Day
We all braced for a chilly November wedding, but the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. The gardens at Airlie in Warrenton, VA were glowing with soft, even light and comfortable temperatures. Renee and Nolan exchanged vows surrounded by autumn colors and so much emotion — and just as guests made their way indoors for the reception, the rain began to fall (talk about perfect timing!).
Their ceremony in the garden was filled with laughter, tears, and even a little humor from the geese nearby. And I loved that they had one of their best friends officiate the wedding, making it personable and fun! But one moment that made everyone melt was during their vows:
“May you never steal, lie or cheat. But if you must steal, then steal away my sorrows. And if you must lie, lie with me all the nights of my life. And if you must cheat, then please cheat death, because I couldn’t live a day without you.”
Cue the tears!

A Legacy
One of my favorite moments of the day was when Renee recreated portraits her parents took at Airlie on their own wedding day. Even her gown carried that connection — the lace from her mother’s wedding dress was lovingly incorporated into Renee’s sleeves and bodice by Nolan’s mom. She also added a delicate blue embroidery inside the dress with the wedding date, her “something blue.” Watching both moms help Renee into her dress was such a touching, full-circle moment.
Private Vows and Fall Colors
Before the ceremony, Renee and Nolan shared a private first look on the lawn and read their vows to one another. Though they thought it was just the two of them, both sets of parents and their bridal party peeked from a distance — wiping away tears as they watched this sweet exchange.
Earlier that weekend at their welcome party, they told me how much they loved red trees. I immediately thought of a stunning red tree at Airlie that I photographed years ago and knew we had to make it part of their day! The moment we found it, it became one of the most iconic backdrops of their portraits — pure fall magic.
Their wedding colors — burgundy, burnt orange, and emerald — perfectly captured the warmth of the season while adding a bold, elegant contrast. The groomsmen (who have been best friends for over a decade!) kept everyone laughing, making portraits a breeze.
The Reception
As cocktail hour began, clouds rolled in and it looked like the light was gone. But just as we wrapped up portraits, the sun peeked through — giving us the dreamiest golden glow! Renee and Nolan ran out for an impromptu sunset dance, and it was one of those unplanned moments that felt straight out of a movie.
Inside, their reception was filled with heartfelt toasts, laughter, and surprises. Renee and Nolan secretly planned a choreographed first dance — complete with lifts that had everyone cheering! And Renee’s father welcomed guests with an emotional toast that left him (and everyone else) wiping away tears.
When it was time to hit the dance floor, this crowd did not hold back. From the “Dirty Dancing” lift to a conga line that went on forever, the energy never faded. Even though it was a Sunday night, no one wanted it to end.
It truly was the perfect day — a beautiful tribute to family, love, and legacy.
