Wide Angle | 35mm

35mm Nikon Wide Angle Lens | Warrenton, Virginia Wedding Photographer

Continuing this “What’s in my Bag Series” little by little over the weeks but today I am going over the Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G lens! So far, we have gone over the Macro Lens (105mm) and the Telephoto Lens (70-200mm) and now we are going to take a step back for a wider view. The 35mm is a GREAT lens and a must have in my bag no matter where I go! From portraits to landscape to weddings, this is definitely a lens I will never let go. By no means this is considered the widest angle lens out there, but this is a great way to build variety in a collection of images, especially for portraits. What’s great about the 35mm is that is the photo has low distortion giving you pretty much how the human eye views the subject. Typically with wide angle lenses, there can be distortion around the frame, kind of like fisheye view! You see this a lot in real-estate which is why it is SO important to see homes in person so you really know if the space is as big as the photos claim. When your settings are set to 1.4 on a 35mm, it has been said that the bokeh is the most true to the human eye compared to the other lenses. The 1.4 aperture is also great for low light situations which is why this is THE lens I use during receptions with the exception of a few events!

I use this lens ALL OF THE TIME for different occasions from portrait sessions

(A lot of times, I’ll start off with this lens — especially if I am the only hired photographer for the day — and then I will switch into my 85mm once I feel like I have captured a good variety from afar. If the space is pretty tight, I will use this lens as my primary lens for this time of day. Otherwise, if I have a second shooter with me the day of, I will have her with the 35mm while I’m on the 85mm — again depending on the space.)
