Photographing Dogs

Photographing Dogs

I get this question quite frequently from my couples, “Can I bring my dog?” Well, of COURSE! I love photographing dogs because they are a part of the family. Whether it is an engagement or a family session, I love making sure they are included. So today, I thought I would share some tips about how you can prepare to photograph with your dog!

5 Tips for Photographing Dogs

1. Bring Puppy Treats

Sometimes dogs don’t always listen to our commands. Especially when we are running around. The dog might be interested in the leaves blowing around or people walking by โ€ฆ it is always a good thing to have a treat on hand to distract them. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I also carry a squeaky toy with me to grab their attention too so I can make the best family portrait for you all!

2. Doggie Bags

Well, I guess this is a no brainer when you are a dog owner! Haha! But I love to be curteous to the venue grounds and ensure we leave it as clean as possible.

3) Are Dogs Allowed?

It’s important to keep in mind if we have permission. Most of the time, if it’s outdoors, we shouldn’t have a problem. Parks are great! But it’s always a good idea to check out the website to see if there are any restrictions. It all depends on the location (especially beaches).

4. Consider the Atmosphere

If you think your dog might be anxious, we should consider the atmosphere. Are they going to be enthusiastic/excited or scared/shy when they are placed on the venue grounds? Or maybe it’s not anything unusual to them and will be totally fine!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Either way, I want to make sure this is an enjoyable experience for you all (including your fur baby)!

5. Bring a Dogsitter!

I suggest bringing a family member or a friend to watch/hold on to your pup. This way, we can add your fur baby in as needed and we have someone to keep him/her occupied.

Another suggestion is possibly saving the dog for the first half or second half of the shoot. That way, we still are able to have photos with him/her without having to keep the dogsitter and pup occupied for the entire 1.5-hours. ๐Ÿ™‚
